Back in The Dells!  It was a homecoming of a sort.  With Carl ready for deployment to the front after the dissolution of the ASTP program, he now awaits orders for assignment to a line unit as a combat medic.  Nila will soon transition to the role of a Blue Star Wife.  But now, it is time for them both to celebrate this new chapter.  Like many other couples of the era, they commit to each and will use this temporary but much needed respite to relax, spend time with family and establish a new foundation in the face of the uncertainty which will come in the months ahead.  Marriage in these situations was a profound and courageous statement of hope!

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a semi-autobiographical 1943 novel written by Betty Smith.

The story focuses on an impoverished but aspirational adolescent girl and her family living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City, during the first two decades of the 20th century.

The book was an immense success. It was also released in an Armed Services Edition, the size of a paperback, to fit in a uniform pocket. One Marine wrote to Smith, "I can't explain the emotional reaction that took place in this dead heart of mine...A surge of confidence has swept through me, and I feel that maybe a fellow has a fighting chance in this world after all."  - Wiki
